Distraction, near misses, and rising claims continue to challenge municipal and commercial fleets. While many organizations turn to dash cameras for visibility, video alone does not always lead to safer driving. During our recent webinar, we explored how Geotab GO Focus Plus goes beyond recording incidents to actively improve driver behaviour through real-time alerts and structured coaching workflows.

Why Video Telematics Is About Risk, Not Just Footage

As discussed in the webinar, most fleets do not have a camera problem. They have a risk problem. Investigating incidents, understanding what really happened, and addressing unsafe habits all take time and resources.

GO Focus Plus works within the Geotab ecosystem to connect video with driving data. Instead of reviewing clips in isolation, fleet managers can see video events directly alongside trip history, safety events, and vehicle context. This makes it easier to identify patterns, prioritize risk, and focus on behaviours that matter most.

Turning Driving Data into Actionable Insights

One of the key differentiators of GO Focus Plus is how video data is organized and presented. Video events appear directly within trip history, allowing managers to quickly jump to specific moments without switching between tools or downloading footage.

Beyond individual clips, Geotab Video Coaching Insights help surface trends across the fleet. Managers can see increases in behaviours like rolling stops or distraction over recent weeks and address them before they turn into incidents. This shift from reviewing footage to managing behaviour patterns is what enables long-term improvement.

Measuring Risk with Driver Distraction Scores

GO Focus Plus introduces a Driver Distraction Score that simplifies complex driving data into a single, easy-to-understand number. Using a rolling 30-day window, the score reflects how often risky behaviours occur and how much they contribute to collision risk.

This scoring approach allows managers to compare performance consistently across drivers and track improvement over time. Drivers start with a clean slate, and scores adjust based on real driving behaviour. This creates a fair, data-driven foundation for coaching conversations.

Reducing Rollout Friction with Clear Coaching Workflows

Successful camera programs depend on driver buy-in and consistent processes. GoFocus Plus gives supervisors control over rules, alerts, and active coaching sessions in one place.

In-cab audio alerts provide immediate feedback to drivers, while structured coaching reinforces long-term change. This combination helps reduce rollout friction and makes safety part of the daily workflow rather than a reactive process after an incident.

Pilot Results That Show Real Behaviour Change

The webinar highlighted a 90-day pilot conducted with a large fleet to evaluate the impact of GO Focus Plus. The pilot included three phases: a baseline period, in-cab audio alerts, and driver coaching combined with alerts.

The results were clear.

  • Cell phone use dropped sharply once audio alerts were enabled and decreased further with coaching, stabilizing at very low levels.
  • Smoking events fell from multiple occurrences per 100 miles to nearly zero after coaching was introduced.
  • Tailgating saw one of the most dramatic improvements, dropping from hundreds of events per 100 miles to fewer than two.
  • Rolling stops, a common concern for fleets, were reduced almost tenfold and remained consistently low.

These outcomes demonstrate that while alerts create immediate improvement, coaching is what sustains behaviour change over time.

Supporting Fairness and Driver Trust

An important takeaway from was the value of video in exonerating drivers. When incidents or damage occur, video provides clear context, helping protect drivers who are doing their jobs correctly. This transparency supports stronger safety culture and increases driver acceptance of video telematics programs.

Smarter Video for Smarter Fleets

GO Focus Plus shows that effective video telematics is not about catching drivers doing something wrong. It is about changing habits, reducing risk, and embedding safety into everyday operations.

Whether fleets are already using Geotab or planning their next step, pairing video with data-driven coaching delivers faster risk reduction and long-term safety improvements.
