:. PriorityStart! Troubleshooting Guide

Before referring to this guide, please be sure you have read owners manual and other included literature; install unit according to manual; and make sure to follow the test procedure provided.  Additional information contained in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is available on our website.

Make sure that you are using the correct model of the PriorityStart! for your application.

Q:

What is the difference between the Standard 12-Volt model and the 12-Volt ProMax model?

A:

As a safety precaution, the PriorityStart! will not disconnect while the vehicle is running, or if the key is in the "on" position.  By listening to the "electronic noise" (also known as "engine run"), that several key components of the engine emit, it is able to do this.  However, some aftermarket, electrical accessories could produce false "electronic noise".  The 12-Volt ProMax unit is able to filter out these false signals.  The Standard unit can not.  Using the Standard unit in the wrong application can lessen the effectiveness of the PriorityStart!.

The Standard unit is meant for vehicles straight from the (O)riginal (E)quipment (M)anufacturer.  It is not meant for vehicles with extra, electrical accessories put on afterwards.

The 12-Volt ProMax unit is meant for vehicles with one or more aftermarket, electrical accessories that have been added.  (i.e. 2-way radios, computers, GPS Systems, phones, and other numerous accessories)  The 12-Volt ProMax unit can be used on law enforcement, municipality, utility, safety, and recreational vehicles that use multiple electrical accessories.  The 12-Volt ProMax uses higher MIL-standard components, and also includes a "surge protection" circuit.

The Marine model is equivalent to the Standard model in "electronic noise " filtering.  The 24-Volt ProMax model is equivalent to the 12-Volt ProMax.

Q:

What type of batteries do the units fit?

A:
  • Any 12 volt battery (universal for top or side mount)
  • Available in a 12 volt marine application (wing-nut application)
  • Also available in a 24 volt unit
Q:

Battery is dead. Unit did not disconnect.

A:

Make sure the battery is actually dead.  Many mistake the battery for being dead, when in fact the PriorityStart! has disconnected and done its job, and it is waiting for a current change of at least 30 millivolts, or more, in order to reconnect it.

Check ALL battery connections.  The PriorityStart! requires a very secure and tight connection.  Make sure there is no corrosion of ANY kind.

Make sure any kind of electrical accessories that you wish to have monitored by the PriorityStart! have been attached directly to the PriorityStart! according to the instructions provided.  The PriorityStart! cannot monitor what is not attached to it.   See example below:

Circuits within the PriorityStart! could be recognizing a condition being created by an accessory.  We use a special "engine run" circuit inside of the unit.  It is a safety feature that keeps the PriorityStart! from disconnecting a battery on a running vehicle.  It will NOT disconnect the battery when the engine is running, even though the battery voltage level may drop below the factory-set safe threshold.  Circuits within this product recognize an "engine run" condition by sensing electrical "noise" created by fuel injectors, fuel pump, fan motors, etc., and will not disconnect the vehicle battery.  In order to correct this, you may need to purchase the ProMax unit.

Note: Per the Battery Council International (BCI)  battery manual; "even when the engine is running, if the battery voltage begins to drop below 9 volts, then engine is at risk of stalling".  Please note. This condition has nothing to do with the operation of the PriorityStart!

If possible, test unit on another vehicle, using the testing procedures provided, to make sure unit is operating properly.
Q:

Unit will not reconnect:

A:

Check to make sure that ALL battery connections are tight and that there is no corrosion on battery cables or terminals.  The smallest bit of corrosion can prevent continuity.

PriorityStart! must have a load draw in order to reconnect.  In many vehicles, turning the key in the ignition is not enough to get the unit to reconnect.  A decal is included in the paperwork with the unit, with instructions of either pushing your foot on the brake pedal, or operating the headlight switch.  The unit requires at least a 0.2mV (microvolt) electrical load change in order to reconnect.

[The Ground Wire Trick: It may be possible to "force" a reconnection by removing the ground wire off the negative terminal and placing it back on.  A disconnection, on the other hand, can not be forced.]

In special, or unique cases, you can force a reconnection by using a 12-volt bulb.  Solder 2 wires to the bulb; attach one lead to the positive post and the other wire to the negative post of the battery.  This will force reconnection.  This confirms the unit is working properly, but not getting the load change required to connect.  Diagram available upon request.  If no other way is found to reconnect the PriorityStart!, you may install a switch with the light bulb and wire it to a convenient location.

If, despite the above attempts, the unit will no reconnect, please call customer service (509-467-4203) and they will be able to offer additional help.

Q:

Running the unit on a Dual Battery System:

A:

It is important to note that the PriorityStart! will not work on any equipment or vehicle that pulls more than 1,000 starting amps.  (Starting amps are determined by what the starter asks for to start the vehicle, NOT the battery rating of cold cranking amps).

For dual battery systems, the PriorityStart! needs to be attached to the battery that is directly connected to the starter cable.  If there are any extra accessories on the vehicle, please check to make sure that they are attached to the PriorityStart! as the paperwork instructs.  Diagram available here.

Q:

PriorityStart! keeps disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly:

A:

First, check to make sure ALL connections are tight and clean.  This allows no intermittent disconnect signal to be read by the PriorityStart!

Next thing to do is to check how old your battery is.  The older your battery gets, the less it is able to hold a full charge.  Keep in mind, just because a battery will take a charge, doesn't mean it will hold a charge.  If old or damaged, the charge diminishes quickly.

You may need then to find out what it is that is draining the battery down.  There may be something that you are not aware of that is making the PriorityStart! operate.  Follow the test procedures provided, using the different equipment on the vehicle, to isolate where the drain is coming from.

Q:

How do I jump-start if I need to? What kind of effect can it have on my battery or alternator?

A:

BLI does not recommend jump-starting for any battery.  Jump-starting a unit with a dead battery, and letting the alternator charge the battery is extremely hard on alternators.  While charging, or jump-starting, a battery that has been completely discharged will seemingly revive it permanent damage has been done.  A battery subjected to this abuse may load-test satisfactorily; however, much of its original capacity is lost forever.  Repeated episodes of this nature will result in a battery which will start the engine, once jump-started, but will FAIL to hold a charge after even a few minutes of nominal drain.  Additionally, overcharging, excessive heat and vibration are also battery killers.

If you are charging the battery using a battery charger, please consult your vehicle owner's manual on battery charging.   Be sure to go directly to battery posts (NOT post on PriorityStart!) when following your battery manufacturers instructions per recharging your battery.  Also, remove the ground wire (on PriorityStart!) from negative post.

Q:

Is my PriorityStart! still covered under the manufacturer's Warranty?

A:

There is a12-month manufacturer's warranty on all PriorityStart! units.  If returned, a dated proof of purchase must be provided along with the actual unit if sent back for warranty.  See more details here
